Protrafo Signs Multi-Year Framework Agreement with M2 Energie B.V.

3 min read

Protrafo has signed a multi-year framework agreement with M2 Energie B.V. (m2e.nl) for the supply of dozens of transformers. The agreement gives M2 Energie a fixed, proven source of medium-voltage transformers for its compact stations, and gives Protrafo a predictable production planning horizon for a recurring, well-specified range of units.

Who is M2 Energie?

M2 Energie B.V. is a fast-growing Dutch company founded in May 2025. From its own modern production facility in Emmen it develops and builds complete compact transformer stations, medium-voltage installations and turnkey energy solutions tailored to the customer.

Its specialty lies in sustainable, compact solutions that emit up to 75 % less CO₂ than traditional transformer housings. The stations are used across a broad range of applications:

  • Data centres
  • Solar farms and wind energy
  • Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)
  • Recreation parks, healthcare facilities and industrial projects
  • Grid congestion solutions with network operators such as Liander and Enexis

Through the combination of in-house engineering, modular construction and short delivery times, M2 Energie plays an important role in the Dutch energy transition.

What a framework agreement actually settles

A framework agreement fixes the commercial and technical basis of a supply relationship in advance: the specification, the quality requirements, the documentation set and the way individual orders are called off. Each delivery then no longer has to be negotiated and re-engineered from scratch.

For a station builder that shortens the path from a customer enquiry to a firm quotation, because the transformer inside the station is already a known quantity. For the supplier it means demand becomes readable far enough ahead to reserve production slots and long-lead materials such as core steel and windings.

Why standardisation matters in compact stations

A compact station is a complete assembly: transformer, medium-voltage switchgear, low-voltage distribution and cabling in one enclosure. The transformer largely determines the footprint, the thermal behaviour inside the housing, the sound level at the fence line and the no-load losses that run twenty-four hours a day.

Standardising on one transformer supplier keeps dimensions, terminal positions, tap changer arrangement and vector group consistent across the fleet. That consistency carries through to the paperwork as well: the same IEC 60076 routine test reports, the same EcoDesign Tier 2 loss declarations and the same nameplate layout in every station file.

Two Emmen companies, one short supply chain

Both companies have strong roots in Emmen and the surrounding region. Physical proximity is not a formality here: engineering questions about terminal orientation, cable entry or clearances get resolved in a site visit rather than in a chain of emails, and a sample unit can be trial-fitted in an enclosure before series production starts.

Together we are strengthening the local manufacturing industry and delivering reliable, efficient medium-voltage solutions that contribute directly to a stable and sustainable electricity grid.

“This partnership perfectly fits our mission: combining quality, innovation and Dutch manufacturing power,” says Niels Veenstra. “We look forward to a long-term and successful collaboration with M2 Energie.”

For grid operators and project developers the practical effect is a shorter, more transparent chain: fewer parties between the specification and the energised station, and a single documented transformer type behind it.
