Sustainability

The most sustainable transformer is the one that wastes the least

A distribution transformer runs for 30–40 years. Its biggest environmental footprint isn't how it's built — it's the energy it loses every hour of every one of those years. That's where we focus.

Our approach

We design for the losses you'll pay for over decades

We're an independent supplier, not a greenwasher — so our sustainability story is deliberately narrow and honest. For a transformer, the numbers that matter most aren't in the brochure; they're the kilowatts quietly lost as heat, hour after hour, for the life of the asset.

That's why every distribution unit we supply is built to EU EcoDesign Tier 2 — the current minimum-efficiency law for no-load and load losses. Lower losses cut energy bills, carbon and grid strain in the same stroke.

Around that core we add cleaner insulation options, a retrofit-before-replace service, recyclable materials, and operations managed under ISO 14001.

Lifetime losses, cut close to half

A representative 1,000 kVA unit, compared against a pre-EcoDesign design. Tier 2 mostly attacks no-load loss — the energy burned whenever the transformer is simply energised.

Legacy figures reflect typical pre-EcoDesign designs; Tier 2 figures reflect the no-load and load-loss limits of EU Regulation 548/2014 (Tier 2, in force since July 2021). CO₂ estimated at 0.35 t per MWh. Actual figures depend on rating, loading and local grid mix.

The levers

Four ways we lower lifetime impact

Low-loss by design

Every distribution transformer we supply meets EU EcoDesign Tier 2 limits for no-load and load losses (Regulation 548/2014). Lower losses mean less wasted energy every hour of a 30–40 year life — the single biggest lever we have.

Managed, recyclable materials

Core steel, copper windings and tank steel are highly recyclable. We manage and continually reduce the environmental impact of our operations and products under an ISO 14001 environmental management system.

Responsible operations

A service fleet that doesn't add to the problem

Keeping a transformer fleet healthy means site visits, commissioning and inspections. We run ours from fully electric VW ID. Buzz Cargo vans — zero-emission mobility supporting projects across the Netherlands and Germany.

It's a small fleet and we won't overstate it — but aligning our own logistics with the energy transition we supply into is simply consistent.
